Lexus is the most reliable of all the luxury cars because they last longer than
most other makes. But what do you do to keep your Lexus in the best condition?
Well, the obvious is following the Lexus maintenance schedule but many people
aren't aware that most independent shops exceed what Lexus calls for. So, not
only does your car stay under the factory warranty, but it will last longer with
fewer repairs needed.
An example of service that is not suggested by Lexus regularly is the changing
of the transmission oil. Automatic transmissions were once changed every
30,000 miles but now most manufacturers don't call for it at all unless there is
a leak. Lexus calls this 'lifetime automatic transmission fluid' on most models.
I would suggest that most should be changed at least 100,000 miles, depending
upon the owner's drive style, needs and habits. In our area, commuting in
stop-and-go traffic will cause the fluid to become quite
dirty by 100,000 miles.
This service can add tens of thousands of miles to the life of the transmission.
Rebuilding the transmission can cost over $3000 so regular servicing can prove
to be a substantial savings over time. The most common service item on Lexus is
the replacement of the brakes. There is an indicator light on most newer models
reminding you when the brakes are getting close to needing replacement. In my
opinion, the only parts that should be used are original manufacturer's equipment
(OEM) purchased directly from Lexus. Even though some aftermarket parts are
made by the same manufacturers, they have a different hardness which can lead
to excessive noise and vibration that would not normally occur with use of an
OEM part. Having the OEM brake rotors match the OEM brake pads can also
prevent overheating and noise.
I think one of the most valuable services I can perform is advising you on which
make or model would work best for you and what service expectations for that
model would be. We also specialize in checking out used vehicles. Read our
suggestions in our Auto Tips section if you're buying a pre-owned vehicle.
This also goes for tires. Some brands work better than others and the ride
of the vehicle can be noticeably different. We don't sell tires at our facility but
considering the importance of safe tires we'd be more than happy to provide our
input on what would work best for you and your Lexus.
Please call or email us if we can be of service, whether it's for an appointment
or just a question. We'd be more than happy to assist you with your vehicle!
